Construction in Wales ready to capture the attention of global industry

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones AM will detail what localism means for construction in Wales in front of some of the World’s most influential construction professionals and clients.
Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Building’s annual conference on 22 June 2017 in Cardiff the First Minister will explain how major local construction programmes and new technologies can fit into Welsh funding requirements and what the integrated infrastructure strategy looks like, including how innovation and sustainability in the built environment can be fostered.
The conference includes valuable insight from the Construction Wales Innovation Centre on the Qualification Wales Construction Review; with sessions on how Higher Apprenticeships for Construction in Wales are giving local workers the chance to become supervisors and managers in a market forecast to create 17,500 new jobs between 2019-20.
Attracting a global and local audience the conference will hear how Wales delivers British and world standards in the management of older and historic buildings and how the newly launched CIOB Building Conservation Certification Scheme can support those who want to develop specialist knowledge and skills.
Some of the most exciting technological innovations in construction are also going to feature including new bomb blast tech, ‘concrete on a roll’, digital performance simulation tools and the latest in laser scanning.
Joining the First Minister will be Paul Nash FCIOB, President of the Chartered Institute of Building, and other prominent experts and practitioners to discuss what these changes mean for construction and how local powers and funding mechanisms can be used to develop skills, enhance productivity and promote innovation, drawing on examples from industry.
Speaking ahead of the conference Paul Nash CIOB President said: “What we do as an industry matters, both as a driver for economic growth and by contributing to society. The buildings and infrastructure that we create last for generations and affect the quality of life for so many people. But if we are to meet the demands of the future we need to understand the challenges that our industry faces and recognise that there is a need for change. This conference is a valuable opportunity for experts from government and industry to present the case for change.”
