What it means to be a CIOB member

When you become a CIOB member you sign up to our Rules and Regulations of Professional Competence and Conduct.

Our professional qualification is a ‘degree plus’ for at least three reasons. Firstly to become a CIOB member you will have demonstrated that you have built professional competence upon a foundation of academic expertise.

Secondly that an academic qualification only says something about what you achieved at some point in the past; a professional qualification says something about you now, which is why CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is a requirement of membership.

In that sense, membership is a contract between you and the Institute. Thirdly, the CIOB exists to benefit the public who use buildings, not only the people who produce them. Therefore there is an ethical dimension to membership - the acceptance of public responsibility. There is no such commitment when you collect a degree.

Some of the behaviours we expect from our members are:-

  • Keep your knowledge and skills up to date
  • Be honest and act with integrity
  • Work within the limit of your competence
  • Treat people fairly and do not discriminate
  • Be responsible for the health and safety of others
  • Do not accept gifts or favours to gain an unfair advantage
